center for democracy & human rights in saudi arabia (cdhr) skip to content skip to main navigation skip to first column skip to second column prince mohammed refom on hold wednesday, 30 may 2018 09:51 administrator center for democracy and human rights in saudi arabia, cdhr, washington dc may 30, 2018 cdhr’s analysis and commentaries prince mohammed “put break on reform,” quranic verses and religious freedom prince mohammed: “women are equal to men” according to shariah law? cdhr commentary: during his recent public relations tour of the u.s., crown prince mohammed bin salman said that “women are equal to men” according to “shariah laws.” we beg to differ. shariah discriminates against women, non-muslims and considers non-islamic laws blasphemous ( shirk .) however, assuming prince mohammed is correct, then why is he detaining advocates for women’s rights? pioneers, highly educated and renowned women, like dr. aisha al-manea, eman al-nafjan, lujain al-hathloul, aziza al-yousef and men like ibrahim modeimigh and mohammed al-rabea were arrested on may 18 and branded traitors for advocating equal rights for women to drive and for the removal of the male guardian system, (“modern slavery.”) the institutionalized male guardian system gives men total control over women’s lives and livelihood. even if it’s removed by a royal decree, men will still determine women’s fate because shariah will remain the law of the land. question for crown prince mohammed: how many saudi males, including felons, pedophiles and former terrorists, have been arrested, imprisoned, lose their jobs and humiliated for applying for driver’s licenses? none. in fact many males drive without licenses. enlightened patriots, human rights and social justice advocates like eman al-nafjan, lujain al-hathloul, aziza al-yousef, aisha al-manea (al-manea is a prominent female ceo of a business empire), ibrahim modeimigh, mohammed al-rabea, mohammed al-qahtani , hamza kashgari, waleed abulkhair, raif badawi, wajeha al-huwaider, souad al-shammari, maysa al-amoudi, cleric salman al-awdah and many others are either languishing in saudi dungeons or living in fear of being rearrested for advocating equality, civil society, freedom of expression and social justice. when asked “what will stop you from achieving you goals?” prince mohammed said, “death only.” how can prince mohammed transform saudi arabia if aspiring people he needs most to achieve his goals, the visionary advocates of women’s rights, social justice and freedom of expression, are being rounded up and detained? continuing policies of fear and subjugation is self-defeating and contradicts what prince mohammed and his promoters have been proclaiming. prince mohammed: giving hopes and crushing aspirations cdhr commentary: regardless of what prince mohammed and his father do or don't do, the saudi women's march is unstoppable and irreversible. prince mohammed's success and political survival depend on the support of the saudi people, especially those he arrests and detains and on the hundreds of other pro-democracy and social justice reformers who are imprisoned and silenced. prince mohammed and his cadre of subordinate princes ought to know that the longevity of goodwill and voluntary loyalty can only be sustained by good deeds, as exemplified by the sentiments expressed by the author of this article . she, like many saudis, especially women and youth, were euphoric over prince mohammed’s social initiatives last year. in fact, the author went out of her way to express her “love” for the prince, an expression for which she was attacked ruthlessly by other saudis who condemned her for praising a “tyrant.” transforming a lagging society that has been condemned by its ruling political and religious dynasties for decades (and in some cases centuries) is a formidable undertaking, even for more experienced, loved and popular leaders than prince mohammed. instead of traveling the world to sell his reform agenda , prince mohammed ought to reason with and convince the saudi people of his commitment to rectify the mistakes and crimes committed by the saudi regime in the past. he still has a chance to cultivate the people’s goodwill and support without which he is likely to fail. giving hopes and crushing aspirations at the same time is more dangerous than not giving hope at all. time is not on prince mohammed's side, but on the side of those who promote justice, equality and a participatory form of governance. french statesmen call for removal of verses from the quran cdhr commentary: “several french figures, including former president nicolas sarkozy and former prime minister manuel valls” are calling for removal of “…verses of the quran calling for the ‘murder and punishment of jews, christians and disbelievers’.” this unprecedented call by powerful traditional politicians and close allies of most arab and muslim countries to reform muslim texts are a warning muslims ought to take seriously instead of condemning it as malicious and islamophobic, as did the al-azhar mosque/university, one of sunni muslims’ oldest and most influential institutions. the verses in question are specifically targeting jews and christians by name, thus it cannot be written off as a self-defense mechanism against all enemies, as al-azhar’s proponent of intolerance argued. instead of continuing to absolve themselves from dealing with muslim-on-muslim carnage, oppression of their christian, muslim and jewish minorities and lethal attacks on non-muslims in the name of islam, muslim regimes, especially the egyptians and saudis and their institutions should be exploring re-interpretation of their 15 century old religious texts. delineating islam as a religion of peace, equality and tolerance and the quran as god’s words, thus untouchable, may resonate among many poverty-stricken muslims, but to muslim and non-muslim victims of oppression, extremism, terrorism, death and destruction, islam and its texts are anything but untouchable. recently, the saudi regime declared saudi arabia (the birth place of islam and home to the 1.6 billion muslims’ holy shrines) will return to moderate islam. the question that must be asked of the saudis and all muslims: what is moderate islam? were there moderate muslim texts that did not include the verses whose removal the french notables and many others are demanding? in their current construction, muslim texts contain many verses that are used by autocratic and theocratic regimes, muftis, terrorists and misogynists to demonize women, other faiths and their adherents and to legitimize religious, social and political totalitarianism. islam was established in the western region (hijaz) of the arabian peninsula. it was exported to what is known now as the arab world, most of whose populations were christians, jews and pagans. they were converted to islam not by choice, according to historical narratives. given this background, it’s the arabs’ responsibility to lead the way to reform muslim religious texts. religiously, culturally, strategically and financially, saudi arabia and egypt are in a position to start a representative council of all muslim brands, sects and regions to explore and debate the best approach to revisiting the origins of and reinterpreting or expunging verses of hate, injustice, intolerance and the delegation of authority to autocratic and theocratic rulers. reforming muslim texts is only the first step toward separation of mosque and state, concomitant with non-sectarian transformation of muslim educational institutions, social mores and legal systems. islam is not the first monotheistic faith to undergo reform from a top down repressive system to one of personal choice existing side by side with state. the international community, especially western democracies, can work with and support 21 st century’s aspiring muslim women and men, who will be the beneficiaries of purging their faith from passages their autocratic and theo
